What the Heck is… “Dance Improvisation”?

Dance Improvisation

Where do choreographers come up with those sick moves? Many dancers look to dance improvisation, moves that aren’t choreographed ahead of time. Does that mean dancers are just making stuff up as they go, kind of like what Uncle Steve does at wedding receptions after a few scotch on the rocks? Not that kind of dance improvisation! Choreographers use creative explorations including body mapping, shape, and dynamics. Improv exercises don’t always mean that dancers are just trying to make up new stuff, but improvising also allows them to practice freeing the body from habitual movements.

For example, in jazz, tempos and rhythm give room for some improvisation that creates new and unusual melodies and harmonies. It’s the same in dance. By improvising, dancers are free to experiment with new forms and techniques.
